Hasbro, in an arms-flailing attempt to make the physical board game relevant again in today's increasingly wired society, has made a new game in the 'Clue' franchise touting the use of text messaging as it's major selling point.
Clearly Hasbro is just picking up on the 'TEXT BABES TO 23456 TO GET BABES ON YOUR PHONE!' model of business, seeing this as an opportunity to make more cash off each game after it's already been sold, and cutting the retail middleman out of the loop. It's an interesting idea in a business sense -taking the 'freemium' model pioneered in online games and applying it to the physical realm - but I can't imagine how random buff/obstacle text messages would be a compelling enough gameplay feature to have an impact on sales.
All told, the only game I see this gimmick working for is Mall Madness. Hook it up.
